7th Cretan Music Workshop
6-11 August 2017
Dear friends, We are pleased to announce the 7th “Cretan Music Workshop” 2017, in Meronas Amariou, Prefecture of Rethymno. This year's Workshop includes lessons of Cretan lyra, Cretan lute, west Cretan violin, wind instruments and Cretan dances with an experiential approach.
Dimitris Sgouros: Cretan lyra
“Music of Eastern Crete”: Kondilies, music parts and tunes from Erotokritos, Rima music tunes (narrative songs), “Pidichtos” dance from eastern Crete, Variation of basic melody patterns.
(Addressed to lyra players of intermediate lever and above)
Dimitris Sideris: Cretan lute
Techniques of accompaniment and solo interpretation, the role of the instrument and improvisation of variations. Musical group of Cretan lute.
(The seminar will be divided in two parts, for beginners and advanced.)
Giorgos Zacharioudakis: Cretan wind instrument
Interpretation of Cretan music and performance techniques for Cretan wind instruments (Sfyrothiampolo, Madoura, Diplomadoura, Askomandoura). Theme and variation in Cretan music.
Skarakis Stratis : Cretan Violin
Introduction to the Kissamos musical idiom. Getting to know the works of Cretan violinists (beginning of 18th till the mid-20th centuries).
- ”Syrtos” and “Pentozali” dances.
Practice: 1) melody learning 2) musical style of expression 3) Tempo (connection between musical and dancing tempo)
Giakoumakis Nikos - Vaggela Katerina: Dance
«Min tin varopatis ti yi» (“Don’t step heavy on the land”) Part 2 :
encounter – acquaintance with the dance idiom of the island’s extremities (Chania – Lassithi),transition to central Crete.
Exploration of the communication between musician and dancer.
Dance as the result of disposition arising from the beauty of tunes and songs, dancing as the settling of personal routes, quests and expressions..
